Into each he cleverly wove scientific and geographical details to add a sense of truth to his otherwise fanciful stories. Jules Verne was born in Nantes in 1828 to educated parents, he was one of five. Although his father wanted him to study law, he chose a different path and decided to write. He was disinherited by his father as a result. Tales abound of how he defied his father in other ways in search for adventure. One such story tells of how he once stowed away on a ship bound for Asia, but his voyage was cut short as his father was waiting for him at the next port. 'Around The World In Eighty Days' is an epic adventure and discovery. An English man, Phileas Fogg, sets off to Circumnavigate the world in 80 days following a wager at his club. He is accompanied bu his butler, Passepartout and together they sample many modes of transport as they battle against the elements and other obstacles in their way to return to London in time to claim their reward. A grippling story, full of intrigue which will delight children of all ages.

In 1850 Robert Louis Stevenson was born. He initially trained as an engineer and then a lawyer but his love was always literature. At 18 he dropped the name Balfour and changed his middle name from Lewis to Louis (retaining the original pronouniation) and began his writing career. He wrote poems and novels for all ages. He travelled extensively to far flung places and even ended his life as a tribal leader and plantation owner of Samoa. 'Treasure Island' is one of several of his works of "Island Fiction" reflecting his deep love for and consideralbe experience of small communities, cut off from the outside world where a story of adventure, piracy and buried treasure can find pausibility. Although it came relatively late in his career (1883), 'Treasure Island' was his first major success. We follow the young man, Jim Hawkins, as he finds an old treasure map and, accompanied by local digitaries Squire Trelawney and Dr. Livesey, sets off on a voyage of discovery with Long John Silver, a villianious sailor whose only goal is to secure the treasure for himself. Silver employs all his piracy skills to reack X on the map before the others but his plans are folied and Jim Hawkins is victorious.

The author if this swash-buckling tale, Alexandra Dumas, was born in 1802 in Villers-Coterets, just north of Paris, to a very cosmopolitan family history. Whereas his parents were relatively ordinary - his father was a soldier in Napoleon's army and his mother the daughter of an innkeeper - his grandparents' lives told a different story. His grandfather was a marquis, a nobleman who had married a slave who came from the country now known as Haiti. When Dumas was only 4, hid father died leaving him and his mother penniless. His chequered history fed his creativity and informed his writing of the many different strata of French society. A young nobleman, d'Artagnan, travels to Paris to join the King's Musketeers. there he forms a special; bond with Athos, Porthos and Aramis, the Three Musketeers of the title and together they unite against wicked people in the King's court.

| Black Beauty
This romantic tale of a beautiful equine creature made quite an impact on the public when it was published in 1877. It's style was ground-breaking as it was the first that readers had experienced an autobiography of a non-human character. People followed the trials of this enchanting horse and suddenly animal welfare issues became valid arguements of the day. 'Black Beauty' was the only book that the author, Anna Sewell, penned and she died only a few months after it was published. It is an exciting and moving children's story recounting the sufferings of a noble and beautiful horse that began life in a country setting on a large estate with kind owners. When they lost their fortune, they were forced to sell Black Beauty and he found himself in the hands of a cab owner who put him to work in the dirty, noisy streets and thought of nothing than treating him cruelly. The story tells of hoe Black Beauty coped with dignity and forbearance and was eventually rewarded when he returned to his original owners to find happiness in his old age.

Victor Hugo's epic tale was published in 1831 to enormous public acclaim. In it he almost elevated the Notre Dame Cathedral itself to the status of a character and in doing so strongly encouraged Gothic Revival architecture. In fact, it helped to preserve this Cathedral in its original state. 'Notre Dame De Paris', as it was named in French, was divided into eleven books, each with suitably Gothic characters whose lives became interwoven as the drama developed. Hugo tackled such themes as obsession and religious fanaticism and with great passion described the poverty and social injustice so prevalent at the time. The modern interpretation, especially where children's adaption's are concerned, centres on Quasimodo, the hunchback, his struggle against the French society of the time because of his disfigurements and his love for Esmeralda, the gypsy girl.
