The general information contained here is a summary culled from self help books, websites and healthcare professionals.

The intention of these help fact scripts is to assist where possible and do not indicate any kind of expertise or in depth knowledge.

In Naijamaicans opinion, The best person for advice is the person you have tried, tested and trust to be honest, practical, truthful, frank and straightforward with you whilst keeping your best interests at the forefront.  May the love of God abide with us all as we continue to strive to demonstrate that it is not in the nature of the average black family to harm, neglect or visit strife on their offspring and to raise our children in sometimes inexplicably unrelenting hostile conditions not by choice but induced by maladministration of governing policies in the environments that we appear sometimes imprisoned in.

NEWBORN TILL YEAR 1

Breast is best for your newborn baby, aside from passing on essential immunity from mum to baby to protect until first immunisations by passing on your immunity cells through collustrum or first milk, it also aids and promotes bonding and confidence in babies and has the added benefit of swiftly and naturally returning your womb to its normal size.

Babies cry, but within reason;...!! Very young babies may cry often, it's normal but too much crying can have you in a state of panic, can induce anxiety if not in keeping with the norm and could be an indicator of a problem with baby.

The crying could also be due to teething, fatigue, wind/colic, discomfort, pain, fever, hunger and may indicate a more hidden issue/problem.

Check baby is not wet or soiled,

Check that baby has fed properly (you need to feed baby continuously for up to and beyond 30 minutes on each breast to give a full meal, otherwise baby only gets foremilk i.e a sip/drink of water, if baby falls asleep, tickle or stroke the cheek or soles of the feet or palms.) and if not hungry has winded properly,

Check babies temperature above 38 celsius is a fever for most babies.

Observe to see if baby is scrunched up in pain or just wailing.

Sometimes a brisk walk out in the fresh air works, singing to baby(yes you can make up your own song) and talking softly to and rocking baby works, More often than not, baby just wants a cuddle, is tired or is trying to remind you they are there.

It is wise to keep teething powder, paracetamol and or Ibuprofen for babies at home to administer in case of teething, colds and fevers. A teething buddy(towel with soft rubber chewy parts) chilled in the freezer is handy for soothing sore gums and may help stop babies from sucking on fingers.

Brushing gently aids and speeds up the tooth cutting process.

Baby massage helps, Pampers the nappy supplier used to do a baby massage instructional cd and book

A bunged up nose can be soothed by covering the nose and nostrils with some petroleum jelly, If your child cannot breathe due to retention of fluid in the nose, use a pippette to administer tepid saline and or grit your teeth and wash your hands well, pop your thumb into the baby's mouth to keep it open and cover the nose with your mouth and suck it out and spit down the toilet.  Make sure you gargle and rinse your mouth out with hot water and salt.  Its your baby, sleep awake waiting for them to stop wheezing or be brave.

Keep baby warm but not too warm, aeration of rooms assists ventillation and helps get germs out of the house and aids breathing, give ibuprofen if there is a high temperature, ply baby with lots of fluid and milk.

NEVER  exceed stated doses, overdosing on paracetamol containing medicines is hazardous and could endanger your child's life. It does not make the medicine work better or quicker. Never administer your child painkillers for more than two doses without coaxing them to eat something or drink something try complan, milkshake mixes, cerelac even with older children who won't eat, milk but not just water or sugar based fluids.  If your child has a sore throat, sore mouth or gums try getting an anaesthetic spray from the pharmacy, this numbs the area for some time usually long enough to eat.

If in doubt, then contact your doctor's out of hours service and relay your concern calmly and concisely, do not be put off by harsh or brash responses.  If a small baby continues to cry, wail and writhe continuously for more than half an hour, then seek medical advice.  It is not easy to determine if baby is in pain by just looking when they cannot talk or communicate.

Go to the hospital if baby stops eating and drinking fluids or if you are concerned about or worried about baby or dubious about the advice given.  A second/third opinion cannot harm.

Never be afraid to put your foot down and ask for medicines, don't be persuaded to go home and wait for the 'virus' to go away. There is no such thing.  Although you cannot cure a virus, by the same token if it has caused a secondary infection e.g visible sores or significant reduction to normal activity and appetite, an antiviral medicine cannot harm and will help.

Some bacterial infections show the same symptoms as viral and some illnesses or physical sypmtoms may be caused by either bacteria or viruses or even both.  If your doctor has not sent you to the hospital to get a swab of the infected area or to give sputum, stool, blood or skin for testing, do not allow yourself to be fooled.

Most illnesses are air borne but they don't go around in a manner that can be attributed to normalcy.  If lots of people are visiting the doctor with a sore gum, sore throat, cough and cold, then maybe he has missed out on a pandemic.  Ask for a preliminary treatment pending results of a test the hospitals are well equiped to do this.

YEAR 1 TO YEAR 3

Congratulations, you now have a swift moving assistant, helper, filing assistant and personal assistant. You technically need eyes behind your head which is of course impossible!!

Step 1- review your home, look at every device, gadget, item, and fixture from a babys perspective.  Try crawling on all fours without looking, everything you bash into is a hazard.

Put furniture guards on all sharp corners, ugly but functional, you can use a huge wad of cottonwool wrapped in gauze held in place by some duct/sticky tape or get plastic wedges.

Put socket guards over every electrical socket in the house.

Instal a child safety gate at the top of the stairs, at the doorway to high risk rooms such as bathrooms and kitchens.  If the doorway is too small , try a hook and eye at high level on the outside to prevent accidental entry.

Keep a sharp eye on the baby, vacuum regularly, small items are easily found and go straight to the mouth.

Feed baby lots of fruit, vegetable, whole milk, cereals, legumes, pulses, root vegetables, fish, chicken and meat.

    YEAR 3 TO YEAR 5

They suddenly learn how to sprint, talk, run, jump up and down and a strong sense of individuality and curiosity set in.  Children become very 'helpful' at this stage, it is important to ingrain the important issues around safety and good behaviour.

Young Children are full of energy, and love to play and rearrange the house and its contents and sometimes may decide they want to go do the shopping so they can buy the icecream.

Key elements for this age, watch your children don't go to put the house keys or contents of your wallet down the toilet or in packets in the cupboard, do not open the door simply because the someone is knocking, don't try to 'cook 'you a meal, dont go in the fridge or freezer to 'pour; their juice, flood the house helping with the washing up , open or operate washing machines or dryers to 'help' with the washing, or paint the whole house with poster colours.

Its a fun and exciting stage but a bit daunting for parents as they sometimes will not stop talking and others they will blurt out all that has been done or is going on at home in public. They will try to dress themselves and insist on going out in the most odd outfits and will try out your makeup and lipstick and of course your clothes and shoes!!

Being firm although sometimes raising your voice, being stern with chopstick and  Mr pinch do make an appearance sometimes that is not abuse. eventually, the messages sink in.  Putting locks on internal doors so that no access areas can be created is helpful.

They are still too young to be left on their own for extra long periods and do need some exercise everyday, a walk down the road, round the block, to the shop etc, get them involved in the activities like getting the bus, doing the shopping, looking at the goods in the shops and vehicles on the road and of course learning road and personal safety and how to relate to others.

Learning at home is needed, alphabets, colours, flash cards, number, animal or fruit dominoes, snap cards and writing, arithmetic and drawing books or just a scribble scrap book is handy with lots of crayons and coloured pencils.

Once 2 to 2.5years, check out the local nurseries and get on waiting lists so they dont miss out on the free nursery grant which entitles children to up to 2 ull days or 4 half days at nursery from the age of 3 and a half.

Once 4, contact your local authority and check out the ofsted shcool ratings and reports, school starts on or before 4 and a half years and before they turn 5.

Check out the information from Ofsted; responsible for the inspection of all schools and local education authorities in England. and

QCA; who regulate, develop and modernise the curriculum, assessments, examinations and qualifications.

Visit Parents Centre if you are considering home tutelage to find out what is required of you and how to get the necessary support whilst doing this.

    YEAR 5 TO YEAR 10

    YEAR 10 TO YEAR 13

     The Facts of life ....

Must be introduced to the children at this stage.  As puberty peaks a closer bond is usually now begining to form between girls and boys, physical signs of puberty become more prominent and the hormonal instinct to behave like full grown adults kicks in.

Also a time to begin to make those decisions about educational focus for the later secondary school years and to begin to adopt focused social activities and lives.

It is important to monitor who and where our children go as parents are still liable and most of all to steer them toward proactive routes such as sport centres, youth centres and groups and community workshops for music, drama, singing, entertaining and theatre acts and away from the street corner or negative peer pressure.

A step up on home skills such as cooking, cleaning, shopping, living on or managing budgets, babysitting, running errands and sometimes organising small activities is helpful.

This I am told is also a very important stage at which the adults in the family need to be absolutely firm about who is in charge and take care to remain in control and be involved with the children.

    YEAR 13 TO YEAR 16

We were all teenagers once or will eventually be, it can be daunting but the key element of this age is to imbibe the need for responsible behaviour and the fundamentals of what kind of responsibilities life may throw at them.

    YEAR 16 TO YEAR 18

In England, the Government says it is okay to kick them out now and reclaim your home.  Leaving home can be daunting, and the longer your children are around you the easier it is for them to save for all those goodies that everyone wants like their first car, their first home and so on.

It is so much easier to keep an eye and nose on their welfare and to ensure they do not fall into the arms of miscreants, keep poor company and add to high youth crime statistics commonly blamed on members of the Black and Ethnic minority community.

This is the time to support children into higher education or higher vocational education and to encourage them to make something of themselves.  Learning to duck and dive will never be enough.  Education is invaluable.
